What is the Online Sync software?
The Online Sync software is a utility included with Sanction 2.8 that synchronizes MPEG1 video files with your ASCII transcripts for use in Sanction - enabling the subtitling effect during presentation, and also allowing you to easily locate portions of testimony through key word, or page and line searches. Best of all, the synchronization is performed online automatically, with just a few clicks of a mouse.
What is the process of submitting an Online Sync order?
1. Import transcripts and video into your Sanction case.
2. Submit your order through the Online Sync software.
3. Check the synchronized transcript when the order is complete.
How do I setup transcripts and video for synchronization in Sanction?
1. Import transcripts*
Import transcript files into the Transcripts category in Sanction. When you import transcripts each transcript file will appear as an individual "Transcript Group" in the Transcripts category. You can import more than one transcript file at a time as long as their file extension is the same (e.g. .txt, .asc, etc.)
Transcripts will typically be in a plain text (ASCII) format with page and line numbers on each page. Also, each transcript usually represents one day of testimony or one deposition. You will normally not see more than one day of testimony per transcript.
2. Import videos*
Import video files into the Videos category in Sanction. When you import video files a "Video Group" will be created. Each video group can hold one or more video files and is roughly equivalent to one day of testimony or one deposition. If there is more than one video file for a deposition the files must be imported as one video group.
When you drag and drop video files in to the Videos category make sure you click and drag on the first video in the series. This tells Sanction to set that file as the first in the series. When importing multiple videos select the Add Items to Group option and type in a group name. This will add all video files currently being import into the video group you name.
*Transcripts do not have to be imported before videos, as long as they are both imported before step 3.
3. Associate video with transcript
There are two ways to associate a video group with a transcript:
1) Use the Associate Media tool
Select any video group from the tree view and hit F6. On the Associate Media window select the media group and transcript and click the Associate button.
2) Use the right click menu
Right click a video group in the Tree view. On the right click menu select Associate To. Select the transcript to associate with the video you right clicked on.
A transcript can only be associated with one video group at a time. This is why multiple video files for one transcript must be imported as one video group.

What is video conversion and text synchronization?

Video conversion is the process of taking video tapes and converting them to industry standard MPEG files for use on your computer. This process is done with commercial grade video conversion equipment installed in powerful computers. Converted video is normally stored on CD, DVD or hard drives. Up to two hours of video can be converted and stored on a single CD ROM. ***
Text Synchronization is the process of aligning the digital video converted from tape to the court reporters ASCII transcript. When a digital video file is synchronized to the transcript one can instantly 'cue' or jump to a specific portion of a video deposition by simply referencing a page and line number of text within a transcript.
Why do you want to use synchronized text and digital video?
Videotaped depositions have become very popular over the years however they are very difficult to quickly edit for use in court. Attorneys are accustomed to reviewing transcripts with highlighters identifying critical designations without anyway to bring the transcript and video together. Until now...
Digital video synchronized to the transcript allows legal professionals the ability to very quickly access, edit and present video deposition clips with little to no computer expertise. Using what is essentially an electronic highlighter (the mouse), you simply highlight the electronic transcript, right-click and presto, you have a video clip ready for presentation.
Using synchronized text and video, Sanction users can easily create hundreds of video clips in hours rather than days or weeks! The amount of time and money saved by using this technology is enormous.
