Annotation Layering

When creating annotations you may find it useful to use different layers for different groups or type of annotations. When you use several layers, you may choose which layers are displayed at any given time. This can be very effective for document preparation and in Trial Presentation by drawing attention to certain portions of a document.

Sanction II allows a maximum of 9 annotation group layers. Any type of annotation or combination of annotations may be used in a layer. By default, all annotations are placed on Layer 1, and whenever an image is loaded, Layer 1 is initially the only layer displayed. Layer 1 is ALWAYS visible.

Selecting Annotation Layers

Annotation layers are selected and set active by clicking on the numbers at the bottom of the Sanction II main screen with the left and right mouse buttons.

When you click on one of the numbered panels using the left mouse button, all annotations for that layer will become visible, and the active layer will be set to this number.

Clicking with the right mouse button toggles between showing and hiding annotation layers BUT DOES NOT set the active annotation layer. You may display more than one layer at a time, however only one layer can be active at a time. The active annotation layer if indicated by the last panel on the status bar.

After selecting a layer, all annotations created on the image will belong to that layer group until a new layer is selected or the Annotation Layer Window is closed.

When you load an image, if layering has been applied then a "+" character appears after the number of any used layer.

To Show or Hide All Layers, use the CTRL-F10/CTRL-F11 function keys. The image must have focus for these hot keys to work properly. You may also right click on the layer 1 button to show all layers and SHIFT click on the layer 1 button to hide all layers.

When all layers are hidden, the selected layer defaults back to Layer 1.

NOTE - Layer 1 is always visible and cannot be hidden.

Annotation tools can be selected either by right clicking and selecting from the pop up menu choices, or from the Tool Window.

To display the Customizable Tool Window, right click on the image and select Tool Window from the popup menus.

The Tool Window can be repositioned by dragging the upper left corner of the window.

Displaying Annotations in Presentation Mode

In Presentation Mode, annotation layers are displayed by right clicking on the image and selecting the layer, or by using the F12 function key.

The F12 function key allows you to "cycle" forward and backward through layers displaying them in sequence. Each time the F12 key is depressed, the next annotation layer will be displayed (all previous layers remain on screen). To cycle backward, hold down the SHIFT key while depressing the F12 key.

You may also use the right click, popup menus to display or hide specific layers. When you select a layer in this manner, using the F12 function key will start at whatever the currently selected layer is.

To display only a particular layer and hide all others, use the CTRL-# hot keys combination where #=the layer number you wish to display.

To display a layer in Presentation Mode by menu choice, right click on the image and select the Layer you wish to display from the Show Layer menu choices.

Note - You cannot create layers from Presentation Mode. Any annotations made during presentation are always placed in Layer 1.

Tip - if you do not wish annotations to be displayed when you call up a document in Presentation Mode, do not use Layer 1 for any annotations.

Note - Any annotations created in Presentation Mode are automatically applied to Layer 1 regardless of the displayed layer.
